Uruguay is considered an important worldwide certified wood supplier. There is a vast area of eucaliptus and pine plantations and important international companies are developing new projects. Uruguay has climatic conditions that allow optimum growth of rapid growing species in relatively poor quality soils, i.e in the lowest-priced rural lands available. The forestry sector is highly benefited because of the export project supported by the World Bank. Investors in this sector see all kind of tax exemptions and relief as well as long-term soft loans and road and rail system improvements, and river infrastructure. An equal benefit for foreign investments has attracted many foreigners to buy great amount of lands for forestry activity.
Multinational companies of cellulose such as Botnia, who bought over the last years more than 250.000 acres of forestry land and made an investment of 1.200 million dolars in their pulp mill, and Montes del Plata (Joint Venture of Stora Enso of Finalnd and Arauco of Chile) with a total investment of 1.900 million dolars in their pulp mill and more than 620.000 acres of forestry land are the two main investments in the forestry sector.
Forestry is a long-term investment. You can expect a 10% annual return with sufficient property appreciation potential to easily overcome inflation expectations.
